Healers Wanted: Physical Therapy Degrees and Occupational Therapy Degrees

Demand is strong for more people to train in physical therapy and occupational therapy. Both careers are about helping others lead better lives.
Physical therapists deal with patients experiencing pain and physical problems. They must have a deep understanding of how human body parts interact. They use their hands to examine, diagnose and treat a multitude of problems, and teach their patients self care. Then they demonstrate to their patients how to heal their body through exercise, helping them get back mobility and prevent the injury from happening again.

About two-thirds of physical therapists work in hospitals or a physical therapist group office. You might also find them in the workplace, advising on proper posture and body motion and treating injuries. Additionally, some administer physical therapy in the home. Wherever they work, physical therapists provide help for every part of the body to everyone from infants to the elderly. They treat more than one million people every day.
A degree in physical therapy from an accredited physical therapy school can prepare you for a licensure exam which you must pass before you can begin practice.
Occupational Therapy: Teaching Self Sufficiency
Another good career opportunity is in occupational therapy. Occupational therapists (OTs) help people perform tasks at home and work. They empower people to deal with disabling conditions, whether mental, physical, emotional or developmental. They teach their clients to compensate for permanent loss of function. The goal is to restore independent, productive, and satisfying lives.
The number of occupational therapist and physical therapist jobs is expected to increase as America's population ages. Both careers can offer flexible hours, and have many practitioners who work just part time. A degree from a good school can get you started.
