A trend is slowly forming. Perhaps you've already noticed gathering concern over the health of fashion models. Cosmetics giant Dove has launched an aggressive campaign to curb the damage caused by waif-like models and eating disorders. Aspiring fashion designers take note: the days of designing apparel for underweight body types are fading. It's time to start designing clothes for "everyman" and "everywoman."
A Strong Message to the Fashion Design World
Back in September, Madrid became the first city to ban overly thin models from its fashion week. The news caused uproar with the fashion crowd, but it looks like this phenomenon will become more widespread as health-conscious citizens around the world actively resist the waif trend. The mayor of Milan, Italy may also enact such a ban for her city's upcoming fashion show.
What does this news mean for you? Equally important, how will it affect what fashion design school you ultimately select?
Fashion Design School
One of the reasons to attend fashion design school is to develop versatility, experience, and creativity. Keeping Dove's message in mind, it could be wise to secure the requisite skills to design clothes for any body type. Because people come in all shapes and sizes, tall and short, fat and skinny, your ability to provide fashionable and attractive attire for the average person will help make you a much more versatile and adaptive fashion designer.
Before selecting a fashion design school, try to ascertain what its general philosophy is regarding body types, models, self-image, and eating disorders. It's important that you find a program that allows total expression, not only in the clothes you design, but also in the models and body types that you select.
Fashion Design Career
Versatility in your design skills can only help your career. And if the examples of Dove and the cities of Madrid and Milan are any indication of where the fashion industry is going, your broad experience will help you emerge as a pioneer.
