Blogs, Buzz, and "Snakes on a Plane"

Snakes on a Blog

When screenwriter Josh Friedman was turned down for a job revamping the "Snakes on a Plane" script, he wrote a blog post about his disappointment. Georgetown law student Brian Finkelstein, inspired by the post and the movie's title, started snakesonablog.com, a website that started an internet frenzy. The excitement surrounding the movie became so intense that fan outcry prevented the studio from changing the movie's name.

Audience Participation

The early hype about the movie put New Line in a unique position, and the studio took advantage of the situation by directly involving the fans in the marketing process. The studio sponsored a contest on TagWorld allowing musicians to create music for the film. By partnering with cafepress.com, New Line gave fans the power to create "Snakes on a Plane" merchandise. The studio also ordered a five-day re-shoot to give the movie an R rating.

An Online Degree in Marketing

Many critics have predicted that New Line's approach to the marketing of "Snakes on a Plane" will change the face of movie advertising. An online degree in marketing could help you land a job developing a movie marketing campaign.
