Vera Wang's Fearless Fashion

Getting Started

With her first job as a salesgirl at Yves Saint Laurent, Wang knew she wanted a career in fashion. After spending two years studying in Paris, Wang worked as a fashion editor at Vogue and a design director at Ralph Lauren. Her work experience taught her about the demands of production and gave her the education she needed to start her own clothing line.

When Wang started her own company in 1990, she began designing wedding dresses because of the difficulty she experienced finding her own wedding dress. Her education and experience paid off, as Wang's company now produces everything from perfume to home accessories.

Lavender Label

Wang's recent clothing designs are influenced by Western and dance themes, and she's started two new labels: the Resort collection of ready-to-wear clothing and the Lavender Label, a lower priced collection, which is already carried by over 200 stores.

A Career in Fashion Design

An online education in fashion design could teach you the basic principles of design and the business skills necessary to navigate the fashion industry. Many educational programs will also assist you in finding an internship or apprenticeship, so you can begin gaining the experience that will help you start your career in clothing design.
